Earlier this evening a group of 6 eager, environment-loving individuals gathered to sign Rochester Greenovation, Inc into existence. For months meetings were held, plans were made, ideas were tossed around, all in preparation for this. Now that we’re legit, it’s time to do what we’ve set out to do.

So what is it that we’re going to do exactly? In a nutshell, we’re here to shine a light on the gold mine we’re sitting on. We Rochestarians are being cheated. We’re host to some 3000 vacant homes that, for one reason or another, need to be torn down. Other upstate cities, like Buffalo, Syracuse and Ithaca have discovered the value in these structures, but save for a few small projects Rochester had yet to capitalize on our own assets.

That’s where we come in. We intend to offer full housing deconstruction services, which save materials for reuse versus throwing them in a landfill. Partnering with other organizations, we will then recirculate these materials back into the communities where they’re needed. What isn’t an obvious building material will still be saved, and sent to our creative reuse center for processing. Here, artists and designers will have access to a vast assortment of materials with which they may create “junk art”, new products, or find completely new uses for old stuff. What doesn’t make it to the creative reuse center will either be recycled or repaired and circulated back into the community, benefiting the neighborhoods that we take from.

That’s the simple explanation. We hope you see the potential for our organization and the impact we can have on Rochester and our neighborhoods. We’ll need help getting to the point where we can make a difference. We’ll need money, volunteers and resources, among other things. No need to cough up the cash yet. If you’re interested in learning more or helping, sign up for our email list or watch this website. We’ll be rolling out some demonstration programs in the near future, and if all goes well we’ll be fully functional within a few months.

Thanks, and we hope to hear from you!
-Jay
